Needs, Analysis & Concepts

It starts with one of Te Pari’s experienced product consultants visiting the farm to discuss the current and future requirements. Te Pari has a range of standard plans to choose from, or the we can assist in creating a custom yard design. Following the onsite visit, we will create a realistic 3D concept of the proposed yard.

Site Selection

The location of cattle handling system is vital for improved efficiency and profitability. Te Pari sees hundreds of cattle yards each year and always consults with farmers on site to work out the best location. Features to take into account when searching for the perfect location are flow, entry and exit, light, loading, access, drafting and more.

Earthworks

Te Pari coordinates and oversees the earthwork and drainage developments for many clients. If the farmer wants to do the earthworks themselves, the project management team will supply a concrete plan so that the yard area for site works can be prepared.

Concrete

Site preparation needs careful consideration and many modern cattle systems have a significant amount of the working area concreted. This prevents the main traffic areas getting muddy and provides a safer and cleaner working environment. Te Pari can supply and place the concrete for the site as part of the turnkey project.

Anti-Bruise Rails

Te Pari Yards use a custom 67x48mm Australian made oval cattle rail. The flat sided oval tube is animal friendly with no single pressure points and no sharp edges. The 48mm wide tubing is approx. 15% wider than most alternative cattle rail profiles. The sideways force of cattle when in the yards means the amount of deflection that the rail will sustain is a critical measurement of its real strength. A taller oval profile rail may look stronger but if it has a narrow width profile it will be weaker in action. Deflection analysis has shown that Te Pari Cattle Rail is the strongest in its class.

The Ultimate Gate System

This patented gate design has no bottom brace reducing ‘muck build up’ in the yards and eliminating trip hazards.

Hot Dip Galvanised

All steel components are hot dip galvanised and rust proof. During galvanising each yard component is cleaned in acid to remove all traces of scale or rust, then dipped in galvanising zinc, coating it completely in places unreachable by spray or powder coating. Read more about the process of hot dip galvanising here.

The U-Bow System

The U-Bow system is uniquely manufactured to leave the upper area of the race completely free of any obstructions or overhead braces.

C-Force Gate System

The Super C-Force Gate System is an optional heavy-duty 3.2m revolving steel gate which reduces the size of a circular force pen as the cattle enter the race. The gate locks quietly into the special gates of the circular pen every 0.5m, moving the cattle up to the race. The pen can hold approximately 15 head of cattle meaning the operator can process 2-3 race loads of cattle before having to refill from the main pens. Almost no need to climb into the forcing pen.

Proven Yard Designs

Te Pari has a wide range of proven plans designed for integration with crushes, scales and drafting systems.

Wide Catwalk

The Te Pari Cattle Yard uses catwalk braces that attach to the side rails of the panel and to the ground. Timber is then fastened to the braces, which are 1.0m wide, providing plenty of room for several people to work on the catwalk simultaneously. A handrail is optional and recommended in some designs where cattle are regularly held in the area next to the catwalk. Other surface finishes such as fibreglass or metal treadplate are also available.

Quiet And Compact Slam Latch Designs

The nylon sleeved slam latches are super quiet and safer as animals are kept calm and stress free. The gate latches automatically from either side. The strike plate is extremely compact with rounded edge to prevent stock damage/ bruising.

Calf Reducer System

This system allows the user to narrow the width of the race by moving the panels in. Quick and easy to adjust and prevents calves from turning around in the race.

Drop Top Panel System

Outside panels are 1.8m high and inside panels 1.45m high. The lower inside panels allow the operator to bend over and work the stock with ease. For large animals the optional Drop Top Panel System can be fitted to the inside of the race. These panels are 1.8m high, and the top rail folds down to the normal working height of 1.45m. This provides protection if handling large cattle and the option of easy access for younger stock.

Clamp System

Te Pari has a unique clamp system that keeps each panel close together with no rattle. It is much stronger than other options like pins, the overhead braces also give the yard extra strength.

Cattle Flow

Cattle have a natural tendency to circle their handler, so Te Pari designs circular yards to allow cattle to flow much better. Research shows circular yards can be up to 30% more efficient than square or rectangular yards thus allowing a much higher throughput of cattle.

Cattle-free Zone and Access Gates

Many Te Pari yard designs include a ‘cattle-free’ working area which provides the operator a safe and secure area to work and store supplies. Personnel access gates are included in many designs and are vital to allow the operator to exit a pen quickly and easily without the need to climb over fences.

Catwalk on the inside of the race.

A catwalk on the inside of the curved handling race is another learning that Te Pari likes to use when designing yards. This reduces the walking distance when working cattle, and also makes it easier to move up and down the race without stirring up the cattle.

Curved Race and Forcing Pen

Curved narrow races encourage animals to move to the front of the yard, and a circular forcing gate lets you reduce the size of the forcing pen as cattle enter, eliminating the need to climb into the pen which is a huge safety benefit.

Cattle Handling

TE PARI INSTALLED NEW YARDS FOR GEORGE AND FIONA KUCKA AFTER THEIR FARM WAS HIT BY THE AUSTRALIAN BUSH FIRES. WE RECENTLY WENT BACK TO SEE HOW THEY WERE DOING AND GEORGE COULDN’T SPEAK HIGHLY ENOUGH OF THE TEAM AND HIS NEW YARDS.

“When someone says you’re part of a family… you know what, I didn’t believe them (at first) but yes, you are, definitely. The way that they helped us out; the way that they support us with everything… they’ve been fantastic.”
Whenever George brings cattle inside, he’s thrilled with the yards’ performance. Whether they’re weaning, pregnancy testing, drafting or weighing cattle, the animals move intuitively through the wide gates and into the pens.
The yards are quiet to use too. The slam latches aren’t noisy, the gates swing silently on their nylon hinges, and the sides don’t rattle.

“It’s a safe, comfortable, stress-free experience for both us and the cattle.”

The concrete floor means George can use the yards in any weather. There’s no more mud after a downpour or dust in a drought.

And when it comes to getting cattle onto a truck, he’s sold on the new, stepped loading ramp. “We were dubious to start with, but the stepped loading ramp works very nicely. It all works as advertised.” Being safe in the yards is a huge concern for George and Fiona, so they love their yards’ sturdiness and durability. The walkway around the forcing area is a great feature which makes life easy when you’re working or moving the cattle around.

“They’re the nicest, safest set of yards I’ve worked, and safety is a priority.” All in all, George Kucka couldn’t be happier with his cattle yards and the service he’s received from the company. “It’s a company that you can trust will do what they say they’ll do, and the product they sell does exactly what it’s supposed to do and does it safely. I couldn’t speak more highly of them.”
